What is at stake as we build sustainable futures for business and society? How can we manage the tensions among business, social and environmental needs? How do we address and respond to global issues such as the depletion of natural resources, impacts of urbanization and increasing mobility on energy usage, and equitable distribution of wealth and opportunity, especially in relation to international trade and trade negotiations? How can we prevent the catastrophic social and economic effects of climate change?

 

These questions are globally significant, and they are especially pressing in the Asia-Pacific region. This region is particularly at risk, but also has the potential to shape its own development towards sustainability. At the 2008 annual conference of APABIS, we invite businesses, academia, governments, NGOs and other organisational networks to address the above questions and to discuss possibilities for creating our shared future. To this end, we are shaping the conference to be as interactive as possible. We actively encourage innovative ideas and new collaborations.

Our aim is to inspire creative approaches to sustainable development and to facilitate access to the tools by which they can be implemented. Key to the APABIS annual conference is interactive participation. We invite practitioners and academics to share their ideas, their research and their experiences. The conference is designed to maximise interaction. It will comprise a range of international keynote speakers from business and academia, open discussion, practical workshops, presentation of academic and practitioner papers, as well as time for informal networking. We encourage participation from all members of business, NGO, government, and academic sectors who have a specific interest in the sustainability of Asian Pacific development or in issues of sustainability and business responsibility more generally.

 

 

The theme for the 2008 conference is "Sustainable futures for business and society". We will explore issues of economic, social, cultural, and environmental development as they relate to the communities, small or large, in which we live.
