Singapore Information

History

Singapore is both an island and a country, located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore City, known as the Lion City, the name of the city is derived from the Malay words singa which means 'lion' and pura which means 'city'. Singapore is one of the most advanced cities and societies in the world. It stands like a little jewel in Southeast Asia. The city ranked first in Asia and eleventh in the world for quality of life by the economists.

Sir Stamford Raffles who was an official of the British East India Company founded Singapore in 1819. In 19th century, Singapore, then a small and unregarded fishing village on a minor island, possessed all the attributes to become a suitable naval base. Raffles, accordingly, established a British base there and created an administrative structure supporting the efforts of the East India Company.

The population of around three million is dominated by overseas Chinese who have migrated there since Singapore's founding at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
